On the occasion of World International Women Day on 8th March 2017. UNFPA, jointly holds UNICEF, leads the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of FGM. The programme currently focuses on 17 African countries and also supports regional and global initiatives.
Our NGO HWARF in joint association with IWPG organizes a Peace Walk on BAN on FGM Female Genital Mutilation. The Program was organized with the support from Velocity Gym, Hap store (Health at Priority)
Large number of women’s from the professional field, working class housewives and uneducated women participated to support this drive on BAN FGM. The Campaign for a worldwide ban on female genital mutilation aims to promote the adoption of a Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly banning this widespread and systematic human rights violation. Our aim is to draw attention pass informative information and raise awareness around the globe more widely among our fellow human rights activists about female genital mutilation and about the pivotal role that the United Nations General Assembly has in combating this human rights violation by banning it worldwide. A Resolution with an explicit ban on female genital mutilation will help to complete the shift of perspectives on FGM from a problem of “public health” or a “cultural” problem, to its universal recognition as a human rights violation and a form of violence against women.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a practice that involves altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons, and it is internationally recognized as a human rights violation. Globally, it is estimated that 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone some form of FGM. Although FGM in declining in the majority of countries where it is prevalent, most of these are also experiencing a high rate of population growth – meaning that the number of girls who undergo FGM will continue to grow if efforts are not significantly scaled up.
To promote the abandonment of FGM, coordinated and systematic efforts are coordinated, and this campaign has shared and engaged whole communities and focuses on human rights and gender equality. We have also address the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences.
