Blood Donation Drive – 22nd Nov 2020

On a bright Sunday morning, we got to see an amalgamation of a social event and the birthday of a very humble yet strong philanthropist Lion Ashok Mehta. He turned 90 on this day.
During this COVID pandemic times, the government and also the private healthcare facilities are facing this grave shortage of blood in the blood banks. This has prevented the delay of many major surgeries of patients in these hospitals. This is a huge concern as these patients might just succumb to their ailments or the ailment could become chronic.
Humanitarian Welfare and Research Foundation (HWARF) with Sir JJ Hospital Blood Bank, Mumbai organized a blood donation drive at Seva Mandal’s Education Society premises in Matunga. The event was inaugurated by Lion Ashok Mehta Sir with his motivating words to the donors and the team. A team of doctors, technicians and support staff from Sir JJ Hospital Blood Bank conducted the drive with utmost finesse taking proper precautions in terms of sanitization and social distancing. The first DONOR was the trustee of HWARF, Mrs Christine Swaminathan. The celebrity health conscious body builders and trainers like Sandeep Tambe and Natasha Pradhan also joined the list of Donors. The drive saw a foot fall of more than 250 citizens from all walks of life stamping their willingness and support for this drive. All donors were given certificate of appreciation from HWARF and a DONOR card from Sir JJ Hospital Blood Bank which entitles them to get free blood equivalent to the blood donated.
The event saw the attendance of many Lions of the Lions club, including Mr. Daara Patel who is a very well-known personality from the pharmaceutical industry and currently the Secretary General of the India Drug Manufacturer’s Association. He also made a generous donation to support this event.
A big Thank You to the “The behind the Scenes” man – Mr Bharat Pathak, Chairman of the Seva Mandal Education Society, for standing behind and guiding the organizers to make this event a reality. The event was conducted in Association with Seva Mandal Education Society, Matunga & Sion Police Station, Lions Club – Zone V, SRK Foundation, Wintogeno, Awaz national News, Mumbai City Amateur Cycling Association, Garja Maharashtra News, Berry Blossom and Bubble. It was heart-warming to know that many realize that giving blood is a very noble virtue and that every person should come forward for this cause.
HWARF and Sir JJ Hospital Blood Bank is determined to conduct a series of such Blood Donation Drives in and around the Mumbai region spanning areas till Panvel, Palghar, Badlapur and Shahapur, the next being in Jogeshwari on 28th Nov 2020. These drives are planned to be continuous for some time to come and help the government healthcare facilities execute their surgeries on time.
HWARF appeals to all organizing committee, Cooperative Housing Societies, NGO’s and Trusts’, in these regions to come forward and extend their efforts to make this Blood Donation drives more and more successful. It’s the need of the hour and it is the responsibility of each one of us, to help the fellow citizens who might need blood in a crucial health situation.
